Perhaps the first of the ‘celebrity’ footballers, dubbed the ‘fifth Beatle’, it is hard to imagine ‘Bestie’ only played First Division football for eleven years, these largely under the stewardship of Matt Busby at Manchester United, such was his impact.
Over the next decade he did play for a number of Clubs around the world, famously in America, eventually retiring aged 37yrs.
A Roy of the Rovers on the field sadly he was very much the Roy of the Ravers off it. In a plush Hotel room in London with the then Miss World and £20k in cash scattered on the bed, having ordered vintage champagne, he was famously asked by the waiter, ‘Tell me Mr Best, where did it all go wrong?’
Amongst the ‘sadder’ quotes attributed to him are ‘I’ve stopped drinking, but only when I’m asleep’ and ‘I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered’.
