Martin Luther King was a prominent figure in the African-American Civil Rights movement and delivered the famous ‘I have a dream’ speech, in the style of a sermon, from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Inspiring not just those present but countless generations he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize the following year in 1964.
A non-violent activist, sadly he was assassinated on April 4 1968, aged just 39yrs, apparently by James Earl Ray, although once again conspiracies were rife.
There are many quotes attributed to him, two that I like, 40yrs on and still appropriate, ‘Life’s most urgent question is: what are you doing for others?’ and ‘Scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men’.
