With a mother called Heart and younger siblings Rain, Joaquin (Walk the Line), Liberty and Summer, River Phoenix’s life was never destined to be conventional. Whilst his true passion was music, a gifted singer/songwriter and guitarist, it was the ‘coming of age’ tale Stand by Me (’86) that brought worldwide attention. My Own Private Idaho (’90) at one extreme and the more commercial Sneakers (’92) at the other, showcased his acting talents but on Halloween a year later, aged only 22, he was gone.
